Holland America

More than any other line today (except Cunard), HAL has managed to hang on to some of its seafaring history and tradition, offering a moderately priced, classic, casual yet refined cruise experience.

Holland America consistently delivers a worthy and solid product for a fair price, and is unique for offering midsize-to-large ships with an old-world elegance. These ships aren't boring, but they're sedate, so it's no surprise that the line attracts mostly passengers in their fifties on up. At least until the line's new 1,848-passenger Vista-class ships begin to debut in late 2002, HAL's well-maintained vessels are midsize, creating a cozy atmosphere, and their excellent layouts ease passenger movement. Decor is stylish, sleek, and, for the most part, understated, though the new Amsterdam, Zaandam, and Volendam have ushered in a brighter, more colorful side to HAL while still maintaining its low-key attributes. HAL's two older ships, the Westerdam and Noordam, are the most humble. HAL emphasizes tradition, and that's what sets it apart. In the public areas you'll see trophies and memorabilia, and the very names of the vessels hark back to the line's past (for example, Rotterdam is the sixth HAL ship to bear that name). The line spends about $10,000 on fresh flowers for each ship per cruise.

History and tradition. The impressive collection of artifacts and artwork on the ships reflect Holland America's important place in seafaring history and lend the ships more of a traditional ocean-liner ambiance than can be found on nearly any other line. arrow Private verandas.

Over 25% of all cabins on the Statendam-class ships and the Volendam, Zaandam, and Amsterdam boast private cabin balconies.

Great gyms. The gyms on Statendam-class ships are huge, but those on the Volendam, Zaandam, and Amsterdam are even bigger--they're some of the most attractive, roomy, and well-stocked at sea.

Sleepy nightlife. While there's always a few stalwarts and a couple of busy-ish nights, if you're big on late-night dancing and bar hopping, you may find yourself partying mostly with the entertainment staff.
